Kia ora and Welcome
Our Lady Star of the Sea is a Year 1-8 Catholic Integrated school located in the beach suburb of Sumner, Christchurch. Located only a couple hundred metres from the beach the school makes good use of its local environment. Education outside the classroom involves activities such as surfing and coastal environmental studies. Our school has a close relationship with the Catholic Church and the Special Character of the school fosters the teachings and values of Jesus Christ.
We have an outstanding teaching staff who are committed to the development of the 'whole' child which includes the spiritual, academic, emotional and social dimensions of each child. We acknowledge that every child is different and we therefore cater for the specific learning needs of all our children. We offer opportunities and specific learning programmes for gifted and talented children as well as those who need academic support.
Our National Standards results for 2013 were outstanding with 97.3% of students at or above the standard in Reading, 98.6% at or above the standard in Writing and 95.8% at or above the standard in Mathematics.
We are a 21st century school which understands that in an ever-changing world, children need to be global citizens who have an awareness of the world around them. We encourage our children to have an empathy for others at a local, national and global level. We have a wonderful parent community who work in partnership with the school. There is a real sense of family in our school community where people are made to feel welcome and everybody has a sense of belonging.
Our Mission Statement says it all: "We will live out our Catholic Faith and achieve personal excellence by being globally aware, dynamic thinkers, self-motivated, effective communicators and actively involved in our school community".
One of our strategic aims is for our children to become proficient 21st century learners who can adapt to an ever-changing world. We have embarked on modern learning environments and modern learning pedagogy in single-cell classrooms. Please click on the attached link to see some of what we are talking about.
Although we have open days in term three and four we welcome visits to our school at anytime. We have an open door policy and prospective students and their parents can visit at anytime. We will arrange a tour of our school by two of our Student Leaders as well as a meeting with myself to discuss your child's future.
